KINGSTON, Ont. (February 4, 2014) - The 28th Carr-Harris Challenge Cup is here, as the men's hockey team hosts RMC at the K-Rock Centre on Thursday night at 7:30pm as a kick-off to FebFest.
The Carr-Harris Challenge Cup was initiated in 1986 by the International Hockey Hall of Fame in celebration of the hockey rivalry between Queen's and RMC, which dates back to 1886. The rivalry is the longest in the world on record. Along with both school's the event is presented by K-Rock, Downtown Kingston and Original Hockey Hall of Fame.
In their only previous meeting this season, the Gaels shutout the Paladins 3-0. Queen's was also victorious in last year's Carr-Harris Cup game with a dominant 7-2 win. Goalie
Kevin Bailie (Belleville, Ont.) continues to be the Gaels standout player, as one of only five goalies in the country with a goals against average under two, and is also third in the CIS in save percentage.
Chris Van Laren (Kingston, Ont.) is sixth in scoring with 18 points among defencemen in the OUA.
Eric Louis-Seize and Chris Smerek lead RMC's offense, with 15 points apiece.
The Gaels are jockeying for a top four spot in the OUA East as they have already secured a playoff spot while RMC is still in the hunt for the eighth and final spot while needing to essentially win out their remaining four games in order to pass Nipissing.
The game will also be a chance for Queen's to tie their all-time wins record in a single season at 17. The Gaels are currently 16-4-5 on the year and with a win will tie the record set in the 1979-80 season where the team finished 17-3-2 under head coach Fred O'Donnell.
Queen's students can pick-up FREE tickets at the customer service desk in the ARC until the end of the day on Wednesday. Tickets are also available at the door for $7.00.
In addition to the Carr-Harris Cup, the Gaels also host UQTR at the Memorial Centre on Saturday night at 7:30pm.
