Gaels Defeat Algoma, 54-34

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont, (January 18,2014) - The Queen's Gaels defeated Algoma University 54-34 Saturday evening in women's basketball action.

The Gaels were led by Jenny Wright (Kingston, Ont.) who put up 16 points for Queen's and Liz Boag (Kingston,Ont.) who put up 15 points of her own. Robyn Pearson (Toronto, Ont.) was strong under the boards for the Gaels with seven rebounds.

The Gaels came out strong in the opening minutes of the first quarter scoring 17 points to Algoma's eight. They continued their offensive pressure and strong defensive play to end the first half with a comfortable 18 point margin, 33-15.

The second half saw Algoma University working hard defensively to minimize the Gaels strong offensive play. Algoma made a final push in the fourth quarter to try and decrease the Gaels growing scoring margin, and outscored the Gaels 12-6. However, the last minute push from Algoma, was not enough to defeat the Gaels, as the Gaels earned a strong 54-34 win.

The Gaels finished the game with 16 turnovers to Algoma's 29 and made 50% of their free throws and shot 38.5% from behind the arc.

The win brings the Gaels to 18 points in the OUA East Division, tying them for top of the division alongside the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees.

The women are on the road again on January 24th, where they will play the Carleton Ravens, tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
