KINGSTON, Ont. (January 23, 2012) – Queen's Athletics & Recreation is pleased to announce that men's volleyball player
Michael Amoroso of Toronto and women's basketball player
Brittany Moore of Hannon, Ont., have been named TELUS Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 5.
Amoroso was a force in the middle for the Gaels during their straight set win over the No. 5 Western Mustangs on Saturday, as he played a huge role on the attack and defensively. Amoroso was efficient attacking, recording five kills on 13 attacks for a hitting percentage of .231. Defensively, he was a headache for Western attackers all game long as he recorded three solo blocks and three blocking assists in the middle of the floor for the Gaels. Amoroso was even more dominant in the Gaels straight set win over the Windsor Lancers, as he recorded nine kills on nine attacks for a perfect hitting percentage while chipping in with three service aces. He was the Gaels top point getter in the victory with 13.
Moore continues to make history in her fifth season with the Gaels as her performances in an RMC doubleheader pushed her into fourth all-time on the OUA's top scorers list. On Friday night, Moore recorded a season high 29 points against the Paladins on 50% shooting from the field. She was the game's top scorer by a mile, as her 29 points led the Gaels with the next top point getter sitting at eight points. In Saturday night's rematch she was on fire once again, as she hit six of 13 field goal attempts while going 7/7 from the free throw line to put up another game high of 21 points. With her weekend performance Moore passed former RMC standout Jennifer Donofrio who had 1,602 points and now sits only 21 points behind Jodie Ebeling (Brock) who sits third and 23 points behind Amanda Anderson (Western) for second all-time among OUA scorers.
