Gill commits to women's basketball

| By:
KINGSTON, Ont. (January 26, 2011) – Queen's women's basketball head coach Dave Wilson is pleased to announce that forward Maria Gill of Holland Landing, Ont., has signed a letter of intent to play for the Gaels starting in the 2012-13 season.

“I am thrilled to have Maria join our program.  In addition to her size and formidable skills, she brings a positive demeanour and strong work ethic," said head coach Wilson. "She will blend instantly with our current players and be able to make important contributions right away.  She certainly assists us with our goal to get taller on our front line.”

Gill, a 6-foot-1 forward, is currently the captain of the Dr. Denison senior girls' basketball team. She has been coached by former Queen's Gael, Kelly Pfenning (nee Massingham) who was a player under head coach Wilson from 1981-85. Gill's Dr. Denison squad has made OFSAA appearances in 2010 and 2011, and she has been a York Region Basketball All-Star in each of those seasons. She is lauded for her presence in the paint on offence and defence and continues to develop her game further away from the basket. She plays her club basketball with the Barrie Royals.

“I chose Queen's because of the strong academic programs and offerings, the new and modern athletic facilities, and the opportunity to develop and enhance my basketball skills," said Gill. "The small town atmosphere, the many years of tradition and scholastic excellence and the beautiful waterfront campus make Queen's University a good choice for me.”

Gill also has a family connection to the Queen's community as her older sister Victoria is currently in her third year at Queen's.

The Gaels return to action this Friday when they take on the Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto. Tip-off is set for 6:00 pm.
