KINGSTON, Ont. (July 14, 2010) – Gaels men's volleyball head coach
Brenda Willis is pleased to announce the commitment of three recruits for the upcoming season.
Joining the Gaels next season will be outside hitter
Scott Wilson of Kingston, Ont., libero
Jacob Glantz of St. Catharines, Ont., and middle
Philippe Goyer of Ottawa, Ont.
Wilson, an exceptional multi-sport athlete, joins the Gaels from Regiopolis Notre Dame High School, here in Kingston, where he was a two-time Athlete of the Year. Coached by Queen's volleyball alumnus Mark McKenna, Scott earned a gold medal at the 2009 'AAA' OFSAA Championship, a bronze in 2008 and a silver in 2007.
At 6'3, Wilson who is an exceptional jumper and had the highest spike touch at the 2010 OVA High Performance camp, reaching 11 feet, 6.5 inches.
“We were not turning over many positions this year and as a result, we were really just looking for a few very specific things from the group of prospects that were available,” said Willis. “I was looking for a new rightside to start developing, a high flyer, and that is exactly what Scott is.”
“Choosing Queen's made sense to me for a lot of reasons,” commented Wilson. “It is close to home, it is a great school that had the academic program I wanted and the team has a tremendous history of success and great coaching.”
Glantz joins the Gaels from the Mountain Athletic Club and is a graduate of Sir Winston Churchill, in St. Catharines, where he was named Athlete of the Year in 2009. He led his high school squad to a silver medal at the 2009 'AAA' OFSAA Championship and also earned a silver medal at the 2006 Eastern Canadians, a bronze at the 2007 Provincials and a gold at the 2009 Penn State tournament with his club team.
Coach Willis says that Glantz's is a well-rounded libero who will bring a lot to the Gaels. “He is a solid passer/defender who can also go into a match and serve and defend under pressure. He is also extremely quick, tracks very well, and guys love playing with him.”
“I'm excited to join an established program and contribute to a winning tradition,” said Glantz. “The players and coaching staff are tremendous and the new facility is unlike any other in the country.”
Rounding out this year's class is Goyer, who joins Queen's from É.S.P. Gisèle – Lalonde in East Ottawa. In his senior year, Goyey led his school to the city finals and was named Team MVP. A member of the Mavericks18U team, his club finished second at 18U Provincials in 2010. Goyer was also selected to attend the 2010 OVA High Performance Center and is now a member of the 2010 Ontario Provincial Team.
“Philippe reminds me of (former Gael) Nick Gralewicz, which is a huge compliment because Nick led the CIS in blocks for two years and won two OUA Championships,” commented Coach Willis. “He is the same type of natural blocker as Nick and he reads the play very well. Philippe is patient but fast and extremely disciplined in the air.”
“I wanted to attend a school not too far from Ottawa, where I could combine studying to prepare myself for a career in law enforcement with playing volleyball at the highest possible level,” said Goyer. “Queen's gives me both those things plus the chance to play in the national championships at home in my second year.”
The Gaels open their season at home with the hosting of the 24th Annual Queen's Invitational which runs from October 15 - 17. The team's first regular season home game is Saturday, October 30 when the Gaels take on the RMC Paladins at 8:00 pm.
