KINGSTON, Ont. (May 29, 2010) Riley O'Neill (LaSalle HS) scored the lone goal to help lift the Kingston Area Secondary School Athletic Association (KASSAA) South All-Star squad to a 1-0 victory during the boy's portion of the Greg Hulse Soccer Memorial played Saturday at Richardson Stadium. In the girl's game the North All-Star squad edged the South, winning in penalty kicks.
Both games were played in honour of Greg Hulse, an alumnus of Kingston's Holy Cross High School and a former member of Queen's Soccer who died tragically in a car accident in June 2005. This is the fifth time the event has been held beginning in 2006.
The girl's game was saw the two teams trade goals in regulation. Jessica Prytulka (Frontenac SS) scored the opening goal for the south in the 34th minute while Chloe Lowry of (Loyalist CVI) netted the game tying goal for the north in the 50th minute to tie the game.
Following that, goalies Jessa McAuliffe (Kingston CVI) of the South and Ashley Houghton (Frontenac SS) for the North, both making multiple critical saves to keep the contest deadlocked at one apiece.
In penalty kicks the North earned the victory as Ashley Houghton, Sadie Whaley (Sydenham HS), and Jessica Babcock (Sydenham HS) scored while Kristen Carquez (Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic HS), and Jessa McAuliffe scored for the South
Houghton was named MVP honours for the North Team while McAuliffe was named the top player on the South Team.
In the boy's game the two sides battled back and forth until the 85th minute when South defender Patrick Reilly (Kingston CVI) played a long accurate diagonal ball to O'Neil just outside the penalty area. O'Neil capitalized on the pass notching the game winning goal to the far post. Despite some pressure in the final minutes of the game from the North, the South were able to hold on for the 1-0 win.
Jordan Doig (Holy Cross) and Jamie Katsafanas (Regiopolis-Notre Dame Catholic HS) shared the shutout for the South All-Star squad.
Game MVP's were awarded to Brandon Hunt (Bayridge SS) of the North team and to Michah Flavin (KCVI) of the South team.
NOTES: Lowry's goal was her second in as many years at the Greg Hulse Memorial; Lowry netted the game winner last season to help the South to a 1-0 victory over the North… Post game medals were presented by Greg Hulse's parents - Jonathan and Marie Hulse as well as both Queen's Soccer Coaches
